Maid abuse intolerable
January 17, 2014
Ill-treatment of domestic helpers is unacceptable, Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung says, adding he is highly concerned about reports an Indonesian maid was abused by her employer.
Speaking at a press conference today, Mr Cheung said: “We do not tolerate any abuse [or] exploitation of domestic helpers in Hong Kong. They are part of the local workforce and deserve our protection. They enjoy equal rights [and] equal access to Hong Kong’s justice system.”
He said Police are investigating the case and liaising with Interpol. Officers will be sent to Indonesia to take statements from the victim.
The Labour Department will boost inspection of employment agencies, and has contacted the maid's agency.
