Gov't condemns violent acts

June 14, 2014

The violence by protesters outside the Legislative Council Complex last night, which caused serious damage, is totally unacceptable, the Government said in a statement today.

Protesters pushed barriers and smashed glass panels to get into the building, breaking emergency doors and damaging its facade.

Six security staff and four Police officers were injured and the council’s meetings were affected.

The statement said the protesters' actions posed a serious threat to people at the scene and seriously undermined public order, which must be strongly condemned.

Police are investigating the incident and the people involved will be held criminally responsible.

The Government said it respects people's right to express their views and the freedom of assembly, but citizens must obey the law and not undermine public order.
