Police denounce protest violence

June 14, 2014

Police have condemned violent acts by protesters who tried to enter the Legislative Council Building by force last night.

Police said today the protesters endangered their own safety and that of other people, and reminded the public to comply with the law and maintain order when expressing views.

The protesters ignored Police appeals and warnings, causing injuries to officers and security staff, and damaged the building.

To control the situation, Police had to use pepper spray to stop protesters from entering the building and defend against attack.

Protesters who refused to leave had to be removed. Twelve men and a woman, aged 19 to 39, were arrested for obstruction and assault.

Police earlier arrested another eight men, aged 20 to 72, for similar offences.

The force reiterated it respects the freedom of expression, speech and assembly, and handles public meetings, demonstrations and processions in a fair, just and impartial manner in accordance with the law.
