Protests snarl Mong Kok traffic

October 18, 2014

Several main roads in Mong Kok are closed and 76 bus routes are diverted due to Occupy Central protests, the Transport Department reported today.

Sections of Nathan Road, Argyle Street and Shantung Street were closed due to protests. Seven green minibus routes are also suspended or diverted.

The department and Police have continued to carry out temporary traffic management measures to relieve traffic on Hong Kong Island, as protesters still blocked major thoroughfares.

To relieve traffic near Wan Chai, only buses will be allowed to turn left turn from Gloucester Road (Central bound) onto inner Gloucester Road via the temporary access near the old Wan Chai Police Station from 7am to 10 pm from tomorrow. Bus stops at Gloucester Road (Central bound) outside old Wan Chai Police Station will be suspended.

As the section of Chater Road from Pedder Street will be temporarily closed for an event tomorrow, and there will be a racehorse meeting in Happy Valley, temporary diversions will be put in place and drivers are advised not to drive to Hong Kong Island.

A total of 212 bus routes are still affected today with eight bus routes suspended and 204 bus routes diverted. Twenty-three green minibus routes travelling via Harcourt Road and Nathan Road are still diverted, suspended or have had services adjusted. Tram services between Percival Street and Victoria Park remain suspended.
