The Government maintains stringent controls over live poultry imports as it is of paramount importance to prevent avian influenza affecting Hong Kong people, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says.
Dr Ko told reporters today that Mainland farmers must fulfil Hong Kong's risk management criteria before full resumption of live poultry to the city is considered.
He also noted that because H7N9 continues to spread on the Mainland, authorities there need to re-examine the risks of live poultry exports which affects the supply to Hong Kong.
Regarding a suspected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome case, Dr Ko said the man had visited a MERS affected area, but his test results came back negative.
