The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed the city's third imported case of avian influenza A (H7N9) this year, affecting an 80-year-old man who travelled to Dongguan in Guangdong earlier this month.
He had visited a wet market near his residence in Dongguan and bought a live chicken and slaughtered it.
With underlying illness, he fell ill on April 6 and consulted a private doctor on April 7. He sought another medical consultation on April 14 and was admitted to United Christian Hospital on April 17.
He is now in stable condition.
Nine close contacts and 82 other contacts are asymptomatic.
Tracing of the patient’s contacts in Hong Kong is ongoing.
So far 16 imported human H7N9 cases have been confirmed in Hong Kong.
