Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said the Hospital Authority has put in place a scheme for follow-up medical care and surveillance for residents according to the results of blood lead levels.
The Government has arranged free blood tests for children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers living in Kai Ching Estate and Kwai Luen Estate Phase 2 after lead was found in water samples collected from the estates.
Dr Ko told reporters today, those with a normal blood lead level will be informed and assured that they do not need any medical follow-up.
Those with a slightly elevated or elevated lead level in their blood will receive assessments by medical professionals, who will carry out simple examinations on the patients and follow up their blood lead level until it falls under the normal range.
Those with seriously elevated blood lead levels will receive early medical consultation and chelation therapy may be required.
Noting that other residents may also want to test their blood lead level, Dr Ko advised them to go authorised organisations to ensure accurate test results.
