Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung has urged the elderly to get influenza vaccinations as soon as possible, as they are the most affected group in severe and fatal influenza-associated cases.
Briefing reporters today, Dr Leung said among the 187 severe influenza cases and 118 flu-related deaths this year, people aged 65 or above accounted for 155 cases and 108 deaths.
"Vaccination remains an important means to prevent influenza with a certain degree of cross-protection against different but related strains, it also reduces disease severity, particularly for high-risk persons."
He said 64 severe cases were recorded last week, a record high since 2011. Most cases involved the influenza A H3N2 virus.
Influenza activity in Hong Kong is very high and may further increase, he said, adding people should maintain strict personal and hand hygiene, and wear a mask when flu symptoms develop.
The Hospital Authority have a sufficient stockpile of various antiviral medication, he added.
