Health chief urges extra flu precautions

January 31, 2015

Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man said today that more serious flu cases are expected in the coming two months and called on people to take extra protection measures.

Dr Ko told reporters that the possibility of introducing a vaccine targeting the H3N2 influenza strain is being explored, but from what he understood, the vaccine will only be available in sufficient numbers in March or April.

He also advised people to be mindful of personal, environmental and public hygiene. Apart from washing their hands, the elderly or chronically ill patients should consider wearing a mask when going to crowded places.

Dr Ko appealed to citizens to consult a doctor early if they suspect they have the flu, because anti-flu medicine is most effective at the early stage - which is within 24 to 48 hours of catching the virus.

Separately, Dr Ko noted that the Food & Health Bureau had explored the feasibility of letting elderly Hong Kong residents use healthcare vouchers in Shenzhen and the scheme should be introduced by the middle of the year at the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital.

He added that the Government was working on the technical details and conducting training for relevant personnel.
