The non-official members of the Executive Council have expressed disappointment at the Legislative Council's vetoing today of the Government's proposed amendment to the method for selecting the Chief Executive.
In a statement, the ExCo members said the proposals comply with the Basic Law and National People's Congress Standing Committee decisions, adding the plan is constitutionally and legally in order, fair and reasonable.
It said the veto will stall Hong Kong's constitutional development, and the fifth-term Chief Executive will continue to be elected by a 1,200-member Election Committee in 2017. The timing for achieving the aim of selecting all Legislative Council members by universal suffrage has also been rendered uncertain.
It called for the community to work together on economic development and livelihood issues, adding ExCo is confident the Government will continue to serve with devotion and professionalism.
