There are no plans for the Government to legislate against behaviour encouraging Hong Kong’s independence, Chief Executive CY Leung has said.
He told reporters in Wuhan today that it is an issue of concern and called on people to be cautious about advocating independence because it would affect the relationship between Hong Kong and the Mainland, as well as that of local and Mainland residents, as these relationships are important to the city’s future development.
He noted that it has taken years of effort for Hong Kong to reunite with the Mainland, and that most local people and the nation did not want Hong Kong independence.
On the issue of tourism, Mr Leung said the industry is important to Hong Kong’s economy, but some people’s radical behaviour against Mainland visitors has left a negative impression on some Mainland residents.
He called on people to distinguish between parallel traders and genuine tourists, adding that the Government will step up efforts to promote Hong Kong as a city that welcomes visitors.
