Gov't urges vehicle access to CGO

October 12, 2014

The Government called on protesters today to retreat from the junction of Lung Wo Road and Tim Wa Avenue and clear barriers as soon as possible to resume normal vehicular access to the Central Government Offices.

It said the roadblocks had affected visitors and external activities, and hampered the operations of bureaux and departments.

In the past week, the number of visitor permits issued daily dropped an average of 75%, while vehicle trips in and out of the complex dropped 98%.

Since October 3, a total of 60 meetings or events planned to be held in the CGO, including the Commission on Poverty Summit, have had to be postponed, cancelled or relocated to other venues.

At least 12 other meetings and events originally scheduled for the next two weeks, have been cancelled or are being considered for cancellation, postponement or relocation to other places.

They include a Financial Services Development Council meeting, a celebration reception for the Incheon Asian Games, a Hong Kong Quality Management Association award presentation ceremony and a Commerce & Economic Development Bureau reception for trade associations.

In addition, more fresh food delivery vehicles are expected to arrive at the complex because the staff canteen reopens tomorrow after being renovated, and delivery workers cannot afford to negotiate with protesters for access every time they arrive and leave.
