I will not step down:CE

October 12, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung said today that he has no intention of resigning as it would not help solve the current situation.

Mr Leung said during a TV interview this morning that the Occupy Central protesters have requested that the National People’s Congress Standing Committee withdraw its decision on the arrangements for universal suffrage in the 2017 Chief Executive election - which is not possible.

He reiterated that Hong Kong’s constitutional development needs to follow the Basic Law and the relevant decisions of the NPCSC, and that any dialogue on the matter should adhere to the legal requirements and constitutional basis.

Mr Leung said the Occupy Central movement has spun out of control and no one can lead or steer its direction anymore.

He also noted that Hong Kong is a law-abiding society, and that while the students’ aspirations for democracy are respected, they should not sacrifice other people’s rights and well-being.

When asked if the Police’s use of tear gas on September 28 was proportionate, Mr Leung said he believed the commander in charge made the decision according to the Police’s professional judgment and training. He also believed they used an appropriate amount of force for the situation.

He added that the Government has the responsibility to enforce the law, but had exercised tolerance out of compassion for the students.
