Students to get more opportunities
January 16, 2014
Secretary for Education Eddie Ng says the Government will provide multiple pathways for students to realise their potential.
Speaking at a press conference on initiatives to support youngsters in the 2014 Policy Address, Mr Ng said there is demand for study pathways other than university education, and the Government has responded by providing more diverse opportunities.
He said the scholarship for students pursuing self-finance university education will be able to match students to disciplines which meet Hong Kong’s manpower needs, such as the nursing sector.
Youths studying on the Mainland will benefit from a $15,000 grant as they pursue studies that may not be available in Hong Kong.
To nurture talent with a global perspective, Mr Ng said a committee will be established to formulate details for a scholarship to support elite students pursuing university studies in renowned institutes overseas. He will recommend the committee include measures to encourage these students to return to Hong Kong after their studies.
Speaking at the same press conference, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing said the Government will provide additional resources for uniformed groups and encourage ethic minorities and needy students to join these groups. The quota for youth exchange programmes will also be boosted to broaden students’ horizons.
