Deputy Commissioner of Police Yam Tat-wing, who will retire after 37 years' service, says he has been proud to work for years with such a professional, responsible and caring force.
Inspecting a passing-out parade at the Hong Kong Police College today, Mr Yam thanked the Force for his career development as well as his colleagues for their encouragement, support and care.
He said the Police will uphold the 'people-based' concept of personnel management and continue to invest significant resources in training.
Noting Police work is varied and complicated, Mr Yam said it is impossible for the Force to write down all provisions for officers to follow.
"Yet if you could observe strictly the behavioural guidelines in respect of the integrity and honesty values issued by the Force last October, and make use of the 'four-way values judgement' as your personal guidance, you will surely develop along the right path," he said.
He encouraged the graduates to keep on learning and acquiring experience from their work to enhance their professional standards. They should also strive for excellence through lifelong learning and keep abreast of the changes and developments of society to provide the best services possible to the public.
Noting Police officers have to endure great pressure in their daily work and their efforts might not be always recognised by the public, he encouraged officers to cherish high ideals and aspirations, be tranquil and satisfied, make friends prudently and make stern demands of themselves in their daily lives.
They should also stand high and see far, take a broad and long-term view in analysing issues and conduct their lives in a down-to-earth manner.
"When things do not turn out as you wish, be broad-minded and never concern yourselves so much with personal gains or losses," he said.
