Safe driving campaign to launch

*
Hong Kong Police

Police will launch a safe driving campaign tomorrow targeting public service and goods-vehicle drivers. It will run until January 23.

During the first week of the campaign leaflets will be distributed to goods-vehicle drivers to remind them about safe loading and the dangers of speeding. Publicity leaflets will also be given to minibus drivers and the public.

People should report bad driving behaviour to the Police or call the Transport Complaints Unit on 2889 9999. They can also call the 24-hour Police Transport Hotline 2754 7668 to report bad driving behaviour by minibus drivers.

Stringent enforcement action will be taken in the second week against speeding, careless driving, failing to comply with traffic signals, using a hand-held phones while driving and seatbelt offences.

A total of 17,802 people were injured or killed in traffic accidents last year, a 4.7% decrease on 2008. Accidents were mainly caused by drivers who were driving inattentively, tailgating and changing lanes carelessly.
