Prisoners' voting rights suspension order granted
*

The Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Bureau is studying the High Court's judgment on the grant of a temporary suspension order in relation to prisoners' voting rights. It will consider the way forward in consultation with the Department of Justice.

The bureau today said it will continue to conduct the public consultation on the policy options for relaxing the restrictions on prisoners' voting rights and on the practical voting arrangements for prisoners and people in remand.

Taking into account the court's judgment and the outcome of the public consultation, it will introduce into the Legislative Council amendments to the relevant disqualification provisions under the Legislative Council Ordinance and other electoral legislation as soon as possible.

This is to provide a consistent and integral legal framework to cover prisoners' voting rights in all public elections, the bureau added.
