Training drill: Search and rescue units from Hong Kong and the Mainland join a short-range exercise off Lamma Island. |

Eight search and rescue units from Hong Kong and the Mainland have successfully completed a short-range joint exercise off Lamma Island today.
The Civil Aviation Department, Hong Kong Garrison, China Maritime Search & Rescue Centre, Government Flying Service, Marine Department, Marine Police, Fire Services Department and Civil Aid Service took part.
The exercise enhanced their co-operation and co-ordination in search and rescue operations and provided air traffic controllers, aircrew and other units continuation training to refresh their techniques and ensure quick and effective response by all units in an emergency.
Two-part exercise
This year's drill has two parts - today's short-range exercise in Tung O Wan, Lamma Island, and a long-range exercise tomorrow over the South China Sea about 80 nautical miles south of Hong Kong.
Today's drill simulated a helicopter crash, with all seven people on board rescued by vessel and helicopter.
More than 130 search and rescue experts from the Mainland, the US and Southeast Asian countries observed the drill.
A search and rescue seminar was also held yesterday to promote professional search and rescue knowledge, and experience sharing and co-operation.
