6.7m Golden Week travellers expected

*
Immigration Department

About 6.71 million passengers will travel in and out of Hong Kong during the upcoming National Day Golden Week and Chung Yeung festive period, up 7% over last year's holiday, the Immigration Department says.

The peak period will fall between September 29 and October 8 when about 2.7 million passengers - an average of 270,000 daily - will pass through Lo Wu control point.

The busiest day at Lo Wu will be October 1 when 155,000 passengers will arrive, while the number of departing passengers is expected to reach a peak of 160,000 on October 4.

Passenger traffic at Lok Ma Chau control point will also be heavy with a forecast of 1.22 million passengers, a daily average of 122,000. Most are expected to arrive from the Mainland through Lok Ma Chau October 1 while the busiest outbound passenger traffic day will be October 4.

To cope with the congestion the department will deploy extra officers and join police, customs and the MTR Corporation to set up a joint command centre at Lo Wu to oversee traffic and handle any incidents.

Hong Kong residents requiring assistance while travelling outside Hong Kong can call the department's 24-hour hotline (852) 1868.
