7 jailed for street deception

*

Seven people have been jailed up to five-and-a-half years by the District Court for conspiracy to defraud and obtaining property by deception.

Police arrested the four women and three men, aged 28 to 54, attempting to deceive a 61-year-old woman in Tseung Kwan O on November 13.

Two women pretending to look for a ritual master approached the victim for help while the third woman, claiming to be the master's granddaughter, told the victim her son had ill fortune. The victim was told to take out her money and valuables, worth $20,000, for blessing.

Police arrested the trio, along with three men and a woman working as lookouts nearby.

Three of the women were involved in four other cases last July to October in Tin Shui Wai, Tuen Mun and Ma On Shan, involving $700,000.
