The Correctional Services Department has segregated 16 prisoners suspected of being engaged in soccer bookmaking in Stanley Prison.
Self-made gambling paraphernalia and more than 100 suspected soccer-betting notes were seized. The total amount of gambling involved is estimated to be $470,000.
Investigations are going on and appropriate action will be taken against inmates who breach prison discipline, the department said. Up to April 30 it had made 26 seizures of soccer-related gambling paraphernalia this year with 38 prisoners disciplined.
Last year saw 262 prisoners disciplined for gambling. The penalties meted out included remission forfeiture (2,940 days), separate confinement (2,675 days), privilege forfeiture (2,762 days) and earning deprivation (2,491 days).
