8 convicted for false trade descriptions

*
Customs & Excise Department

Eight hawkers have been given suspended sentences for possessing goods for sale with false trade descriptions.

Aged 24 to 49 the hawkers were given sentences of up to four months' jail suspended for up to two years. One was additionally fined $40,000.

Customs officers seized 110,000 pieces of the falsely-described goods from the hawkers' stalls in Mong Kok and To Kwa Wan last year worth $380,000. The goods were marked with 18K gold-plated descriptions on the packaging. Laboratory tests found they were electroplated with a thin layer of gold weighing less than eight carats.
