5,930 fake RMB banknotes seized in 2006
*

Police seized 5,930 counterfeit renminbi banknotes last year, up 16.3% on 2005. Most were 100 yuan notes.

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee told legislators today that Police have spared no effort in combating counterfeiting and regularly liaise with the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau, the Monetary Authority and the banking industry.

Police have been investigating the techniques used by criminal syndicates to make counterfeit notes, and have found that fake renminbi notes is now done to a much higher standard.

The People's Bank of China has started issuing new renminbi notes bearing additional security features, making them easier to authenticate.
