Chief Executive Donald Tsang has condemned the criminal damage to 29 gravestones at Gallant Garden, Wo Hop Shek Cemetery. Patrols have been stepped up while security will be strengthened.
Speaking to the press after attending church this morning, Mr Tsang said those who lie in Gallant Garden lost their lives while serving Hong Kong people.
Noting the senseless and wanton act of vandalism is shameful and has hurt the feelings of Hong Kong people, the Chief Executive said the concerned department will repair the gravestones as soon as possible.
Police are investigating the criminal damage while government departments are co-ordinating closely with an aim to help the families.
Security strengthened
Food & Environmental Hygiene Department Deputy Director Annette Lee said patrols have been stepped up at Gallant Garden in light of the incident. The number of security staff will be increased to 10 from eight this week while a patrol station will be built.
She told reporters today the garden will be fitted with gates and fences to boost security while the addition of a night patrol team comprising two to three security guards is under consideration. The department will also work with Police to identify suitable locations for installing closed circuit TVs.
Ms Lee stressed security measures are always kept under review and will be strengthened according to the needs of individual cemeteries.
On the repair of gravestones, Ms Lee said the Civil Service Bureau and Hospital Authority will bear the costs incurred.
