A solicitor and two other people have been convicted by the District Court of their roles in swindling $5.93 million with bogus standby letters of credit.
Chan Nai-keung, 55, and Chiang Pak-yeung, 51, of Paul Chan & Co Solicitors, and Leading Group Investment Enterprise proprietor Lee Kwok-on, 38, were found guilty of six offences that occurred between March 2004 and January 2005.
Deputy Judge Symon Wong adjourned sentencing to June 14 and remanded the defendants in custody.
Six co-defendants were also charged in the case - Zhong Pei-hong, 44, Lam Chun, 36, Andy Chan, 31, Albert Lee, 47, Lui Chung-yee, 47, and Collins Lee, 49.
Zhong, Lam, Andy Chan, Lee Tai-sang and Lee Chi-wing pleaded guilty to their roles. Zhong and Lam were jailed 12 months, while Andy Chan was jailed eight months. Lui jumped bail and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. Lee Tai-sang and Lee Chi-wing will also be sentenced June 14.
