Smuggled cars: Four crew menbers were arrested after Customs officers seized from a Mainland cargo vessel off West Lamma Channel 45 dismantled cars, worth about $900,000.

*

Customs officers have seized from a Mainland cargo vessel off West Lamma Channel 45 dismantled private cars and vehicle spare parts worth about $900,000, and arrested four crew members.

At about 10pm last night, Customs officers of the Marine Enforcement Division intercepted the departing vessel, and found the goods were not covered by an export manifest.

Four Mainland crew members, aged 25 to 29, were arrested. They were detained at Customs Marine Base and would be charged with attempting to export unmanifested cargo.

The department said it would continue to take vigorous enforcement action against cross-boundary smuggling activities. Under the Import & Export Ordinance, smuggling is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and seven years' jail.
