Safe structure: Kwun Tong District Officer Pauline Wong says Wai King Building is structurally safe.

An inter-departmental working group has assessed the gas explosion site at Wai King Building in Ngau Tau Kok and confirmed the building is structurally safe, while gas and electricity supply has resumed, Kwun Tong District Officer Pauline Wong says.

However, due to damage, water supplies and lift services in the building will not resume for up to five days.

Inspecting the site today, Miss Wong said residents have been notified of the situation and it is up to them to decide whether or not to stay in the building during this time. Ngau Tau Kok Caritas Community Centre and the Kai Yip Community Hall are open for residents to stay at.

Help at hand

The Social Welfare Department has provided meals and emergency relief articles to 23 residents. It will continue assessing their needs and provide help and counselling. It has also arranged a temporary shelter for the 98-year-old man whose wife died in the accident. Eight others were injured. Of the three remaining in hospital, one is critical and two are in stable condition.

During her visits to patients, Director of Home Affairs Pamela Tan offered financial and other assistance to the victims and their families.

Electrical & Mechanical Services Department officers and Towngas engineers have identified the location of the gas leak and replaced all affected pipes. Comprehensive safety tests are being conducted.

Helpdesks have been set up by the Kwun Tong District Office at the scene, at United Christian Hospital and at the Caritas Community Centre in Ngau Tau Kok. Residents affected can also call 9020 7371.

The Police, Fire Services and Electrical & Mechanical Services Departments continue investigations.
