A Police constable and a suspect died and another constable was seriously injured in a Tsim Sha Tsui shootout early this morning. Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee say they are deeply shocked and saddened by the case.
At about 1.15am today, the Police console received a request for help from an officer on patrol at the junction of Canton Road and Austin Road.
Police officers found three men, including two Police constables and a suspect, lying unconscious in a subway near Victoria Towers. All had been shot.
Three pistols, two belonging to the constables, and another similar to a Police pistol, were found at the scene. The suspect also had some Police documents on him.
The three men were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where the 33-year-old Police constable, who had been shot in the head, was certified dead at 1.47am. The suspect was also certified dead at 1.45am. The other Police constable, aged 28, remains in hospital in critical condition, with injuries to his face and legs.
Officials visit injured constable
Mr Tsang and Mr Lee have expressed their deepest sympathy to the relatives of the two constables. They visited the injured constable in hospital and expressed their wishes for his speedy recovery.
Commissioner of Police Dick Lee said the Police are also shocked and saddened by the shooting case, adding the Organised Crime & Triad Bureau is investigating.
He said about 10 shots were fired during the incident and the suspect's identity has yet to be confirmed. When asked whether one of the pistols was related to the death of Police Constable Leung Shing-yan in 2001, Mr Lee said further investigation is required.
Police appeal to anyone who saw the incident and those who might have information to offer to contact investigating officers on 2860 8366.
Civil Service Bureau offers assistance
Secretary for the Civil Service Denise Yue also expressed profound sadness over the constable's death, and offered her deepest condolences to his family on behalf of the civil service.
She also expressed her sincere wish for the other constable's speedy recovery.
"The Civil Service Bureau has been in contact with the Hong Kong Police Force and will make every effort to help the two families during this sad and difficult period," Miss Yue said.
