Safe city: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world.
*

Crime fell 0.5% in January, over the same month last year, to 6,761 cases, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee says.

Despite a slight decease in the overall crime rate, there was a slight increase in violent crime like assault, rape and indecent assault, theft, car theft and some deception cases.

Speaking after the Fight Crime Committee meeting today, Mr Lee said overall the crime situation is very stable, adding Hong Kong still remains one of the safest cities in the world.

Noting juvenile criminals continued to drop, he said this is a good sign indicating that our education and publicity programmes work.

The Customs & Excise Department and Police have increased efforts in drug enforcement resulting in a record seizure of ketamine, and a fall in the number of drug abusers.

Robbery cases increased 10% after recording a drop in 2005, while rape cases went up from six to eight.

Mr Lee reminded travellers to take care and beware of disturbances and their personal safety when abroad. If in difficulty, contact the Immigration Department on its 1868 hotline.
