District councillor jailed for graft

ICAC

A Sha Tin District Council member has been jailed one year by the District Court for soliciting and accepting bribes over the renewal of residential coach services in Ma On Shan.

Wong Kwok-hung, 48, also chairman of the Incorporated Owners of Kam Ying Court Phase II, Ma On Shan, was found guilty of soliciting and accepting an advantage.

Since 2003, Nam Hoi Bus Services Company has been operating a coach service between Kam Ying Court and Lai Chi Kwok for residents. Nam Hoi had to renew the passenger service licence certificate to continue services. The renewal required the recommendation of Wong as the IO chairman.

On February 24, 2004, Wong solicited $100,000 from a director of Nam Hoi as a reward for helping it in renewing the certificate. On September 23, 2004, Wong was arrested after accepting $30,000 as partial payment.
