Parcel probe: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said freedoms of the press and speech will be protected.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee have condemned the parcel bomb attack on the offices of Ming Pao newspaper in Chai Wan, saying the case will be investigated thoroughly.

At 2pm today a staff member in the paper's editorial department opened a package sent with a bouquet of flowers and a letter. The parcel exploded, injuring the woman. She was sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and her condition is stable.

After the attack Mr Lee said the Government will not tolerate violent threats to press freedom. He said Hong Kong is a peaceful community which treasures freedom of speech and pledged to protect such freedoms. Police are now investigating the incident.

When asked on security arrangements for the WTO's 6th Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong next month, Mr Lee said the possibility of a terrorist attack is slim. However, the event may impact public order and preparations are being made in this regard.
