Operation against illegal skip placing

Keep clear: The Lands Department has removed six skips in an operation in Tsueng Kwan O.

*

Six cargo compartments placed on streets have been removed and confiscated while two skip owners will be prosecuted in a Lands Department operation in Tseung Kwan O.

The department launched an inspection yesterday and issued 47 notices requiring owners of authorised skips to remove them from streets within a day. In today's operation, eight skips, all inside a carpark at Chun Cheong Street, Tseung Kwan O, remained.

While the department was arranging the removal of the skips, two people came and claimed two of them. Therefore, six skips were removed and confiscated while the two owners will be prosecuted.

Skips placed on streets or at roadsides are mostly used as temporary storage for construction waste generated from fitting-out or modification works in nearby buildings, pending transportation to landfills for dumping. As skips are normally not left for more than two or three days, their impact on traffic and pedestrians is brief.

However, if such skips cause hygiene problems or obstruction, the Police, Food & Environmental Hygiene Department or Lands Department will take appropriate action.

The Lands Department issued 183 notices requiring skip owners to remove skips from streets in the first half of this year. Last year, 195 were notices posted.
