Customs curbing pork, poultry smuggling

York Chow and Timothy Tong

Joint forces: Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow is briefed by Commissioner of Customs & Excise Timothy Tong and two Customs officers.

Customs officers will maintain full vigilance to detect meat and poultry smuggling, despite heavy passenger and vehicular flow at boundary control points.

 

This was the message from Commissioner of Customs & Excise Timothy Tong who briefed Secretary for Health, Welfare & Food Dr York Chow on action against smuggling today.

 

Dr Chow visited Lok Ma Chau Control Point where he was briefed on the advanced equipment used to detect contraband, and on joint operations with the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department on meat and poultry smuggling.

 

Last year, in 61 operations, 30,064kg of illicit pork and 11,862kg of illicit chicken was seized. From last January to June, 31 they have seized 13,302kg of pork and 4,027kg of chicken.
