Need for speed: These two new Keka-class launches will bolster Marine Police patrols.

Commissioner of Police Dick Lee has unveiled two new Keka-class launches which will bolster Marine Police patrols.

The launches measure 30 metres in length and 6.3 metres in width and have a displacement of 110 tonnes. They can reach a maximum speed of 27 knots.

Made of aluminium alloy, the vessels are lighter and consume a fifth less fuel than other Police launches of similar size. They feature the latest hi-tech radar, thermal image, global positioning, electronic chart and navigation systems.

The wheelhouse's 360-degree panoramic field of vision gives officers full view of surrounding waters, and hydraulic cranes allow the launch and retrieval of speedboats from the vessels.

Enhanced policing at sea

Launching the vessels today at Joss House Bay, Mr Lee said they epitomise the force's determination to enhance frontline policing.

"The Marine Police is the major law enforcement agency in Hong Kong waters and great importance is attached to upgrading its equipment and constantly enhancing its operational efficiency to maintain law and order at sea," he said.

The vessels replace the Damen-class launches which have been in service for the past 20 years.

The first two Keka launches were introduced in 2002 and have since demonstrated their efficiency well.
