Hong Kong Police

Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee and Acting Police Commissioner Gordon Fung have expressed their condolences after a 28-year-old officer was killed in a traffic accident in Yau Ma Tei today.

About 4.30am a 29-year-old man was driving in the eastbound lane of the Gascoigne Road flyover. His car reportedly veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a motorcycle ridden by Police Constable Chan Yip-shing who was thrown from the flyover. He was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and certified dead at 4.56am.

"I am deeply sorry for the loss of a committed officer. I wish to express my deepest condolences to his family," Mr Lee said. "The Security Bureau stands ready to provide all possible assistance to help his family members."

Mr Fung also said full support would be rendered to them through this sad and difficult period. He extended his deepest sympathy to his family and colleagues.

The driver of the car was arrested for drink driving, and the accident is now being investigated. Anyone who might have witnessed it is urged to contact investigating officers on 2773 5220.

Mr Chan, attached to Kowloon West's Traffic Enforcement & Control Division, joined the force in 1993. He had served in Police Tactical Unit, Sau Mau Ping Division and Airport Security Unit.
