The ICAC has arrested a Social Welfare Department officer for allegedly soliciting and accepting $3,000 from a welfare recipient for not taking action against their failure to disclose their income.
The officer was arrested in an operation on Tuesday.
Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are required to return to the department any excessive amount of subsidy if they receive monetary rewards from employment.
An investigation by the department suspected the recipient had purposely concealed her employment. The arrested officer was then assigned to review the application.
ICAC inquiries found that during an interview with the recipient, the officer allegedly solicited $3,000 from her for not taking action.
Believing the officer would help "settle" the investigation and that she would not be asked to return the excessive amount of subsidy, the recipient gave the officer $3,000 in cash.
The arrestee has been released on ICAC bail. Inquiries are continuing.
