Number of drug abusers falls 16%

Say no to drugs: Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee visits Phase II of the Drug InfoCentre. The centre will disseminate anti-drug messages to young people using interactive multimedia formats.
*

There were fewer drug abusers reported in the first half of 2003 compared with the same period in 2002, suggesting the Government's anti-drug efforts are working, the Secretary for Security says.

The number of drug abusers dropped 15.9% in the first six months of 2003, while the number of those with drug problems aged under 21 fell by 37.9% in that period.

Welcoming the downward trend, Ambrose Lee said it reflects the success of Hong Kong's anti-drug efforts in containing the problem.

Drug InfoCentre to spread anti-drug messages

Mr Lee today visited the Security Bureau's Narcotics Division to see the efforts Hong Kong has made in tackling the problem of drug abuse and trafficking, money laundering and terrorist financing.

He then toured the Drug InfoCentre Phase II, a $50-million partnership project with the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to set up Hong Kong's first exhibition centre on drug education.

The Drug InfoCentre, with its facilities specially designed to appeal to young people, is another milestone in the fight against drug abuse.

The 900-square-metre centre, is located on the Roof Floor of the Low Block of the Queensway Government Offices and is scheduled for operation in 2004.

It consists of three exhibition areas, an interactive theatre, an info-cafe and a classroom. Interactive multimedia exhibits will disseminate anti-drug messages to young people.

Hong Kong will continue fight against money laundering

Mr Lee then visited the Joint Financial Intelligence Unit at Police Headquarters - jointly operated by the Police and the Customs & Excise Department to fight against money laundering.

Being an international financial centre, he said, Hong Kong must maintain vigilance in guarding against money laundering and terrorist-financing activities.

We will continue to participate actively in the work of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering and take steps to implement the revised set of 40 recommendations, he added.
