MTRC refining safety gate system

*

The MTR Corporation is further collating and analysing data collected during a trial of automatic platform gates at MTR East Rail stations last year, to curb delay issues caused by the safety system.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng told legislators today the trial of mechanical gap fillers at Lo Wu MTR Station caused delays, incurring additional platform dwell time for passengers and lengthening their total journey time.

Some stations on the line have platforms with greater curvatures and wider platform gaps. Ms Cheng said the platform gap issue must be properly resolved to reduce the risk of passengers inadvertently stepping into the gaps due to visual obstruction caused by gates.

The MTRC developed the mechanical gap filler system to curb the problem. However, delays were caused during the trials.

She said the corporation will further assess the system's performance and its implication on train services.
