Billboard safety checks urged
*
Buildings Department

Buildings Department Chief Building Surveyor Ben Chong urges shop owners to conduct regular checks on billboards to ensure public safety. He also calls on the public to report dangerous and unattended billboards.

Speaking on a radio talk show this morning, Mr Chong said there are rules to regulate the installation of billboards, adding guidelines have been issued on billboard safety.

The department conducts regular inspections on dangerous billboards. Over 100,000 billboards were inspected during the past five years. About 5,000 dangerous or unattended signboards were removed.

He said owners have the responsibility to take good care of their signboards. The public can call 2626 1616 to report dangerous billboards.

Noting existing laws do not include mandatory billboard inspection and maintenance, Mr Chong said the situation will improve when the proposed mandatory building inspection scheme is implemented because owners must conduct regular checks on every part of their buildings including signboards.
