Marine safety campaign to intensify

*
Marine Department

The Marine Department will enhance its successful Safety Afloat Campaign to further cut incidents at sea.

Speaking at the Safety Afloat Educational Seminar today, Director of Marine Roger Tupper said there were no fatalities involving pleasure craft last year, proving the benefits of the campaign.

"However we should not be complacent. This year's campaign needs to be intensified to ensure the message of 'safety first' gets to the public loud and clear," he said, noting the growing popularity of boating and jet-skis.

The department and Police will boost patrols in speed-restricted zones, waterways off popular gazetted beaches and water-sport sites. And anti-speeding operations, education seminars and publicity campaigns will be launched this year.
