Airbus A380 fly-past over Victoria Harbour

Harbour view: The Airbus A380 flies low over Victoria Harbour during its Hong Kong demonstration flight.

The Airbus A380 - the world's largest passenger airliner - has successfully conducted a demonstration flight in Hong Kong, showing the city's importance as an aviation hub and tourist destination, Director-General of Civil Aviation Norman Lo says.

The "superjumbo" took off from Hong Kong International Airport about 8am today and flew over Tsing Ma Bridge and low over Victoria Harbour before touching down again.

Mr Lo said the flight will promote Hong Kong's image as Asia's world city.

The Civil Aviation Department worked closely with Airbus on the flight path and one of its safety officers was aboard the flight to ensure safety.
