Telecom bill to be tabled soon

*

A bill defining the new Communications Authority will be tabled to lawmakers within the current legislative session, Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology Joseph Wong says.

He said the legislative exercise mainly involves the statutory establishment, organisational framework and working procedures of the new body, which will to assume all functions of the two existing regulatory bodies, the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Authorities.

The scope of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority Trading Fund will also be amended and transformed into the trading fund for the new authority.

Mr Wong said the new regulator will be equipped with a broad cross-sectoral perspective and competence to formulate a timely and effective response to the converging environment. It will also be a one-stop-shop for tackling all electronic communications issues.
