Buildings' fire-safety measures sufficient
*
Buildings Department

There are sufficient fire-safety requirements to protect all private buildings in Hong Kong, the Buildings Department says, adding any suggestion that skyscrapers are more prone to fire risk is unfounded.

In response to a press report on the fire hazard of skyscrapers today, the department said there are measures to ensure the structural integrity of a building in the event of a fire and to prevent the spread of fire within a building.

Appropriate fire-service installations are also provided to protect occupants upon the outbreak of a fire.

Fire-fighting and rescue staircases and lifts are provided for firefighters to reach any part of a high-rise building and battle a blaze using the fire-service installations already in place.

Adequate staircases with sufficient fire and smoke protection are also provided for the occupants to evacuate a building, the department said, adding fire refuge floors are in place in high-rise buildings for occupants to seek temporary shelter.
