Experts back bridge parapets enhancement
*
Transport Advisory Committee

The Transport Advisory Committee has applauded the Government's efforts to enhance bridge parapets and roadside barriers.

At its meeting today, the committee's chairman Teresa Cheng said using the calibrated computer models, the enhanced designs of bridge parapets and roadside barriers have proven to be adequate in preventing vehicles from penetrating or passing over them.

Those facilities can only provide a passive line of defence to reduce accidents' severity, she stressed, adding driving behaviour is the most important factor in enhancing road safety.

The committee was also briefed on existing measures to combat drink driving and hand-held mobile-phone use while driving.

Attitude, behavior have greatest bearing

Driving attitudes and behaviour have the greatest bearing on road safety, Ms Cheng said, adding it is important for the Government to monitor accident statistics and review legislation's effectiveness.

It should also carry out continuous enforcement action, and launch education and publicity initiatives to combat inappropriate driving practices, she added.
