Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation Chairman Michael Tien says there will be sufficient East Rail service during the Lunar New Year, adding the number of trips operated during the peak period will be 22 an hour.

Speaking to the press this evening, Mr Tien said overnight train service will be provided on January 28. He believed train services will be able to cope with the expected demand during the holidays.

Meanwhile, the corporation has completed the inspection of 1,465 major mechanical components. Minor cracks have been found on 212 components  - 14% of the total.

Mr Tien said repair and reinforcement works for the cracked equipment will be completed by January 28.

In the long run, the company will work out new ways to install and secure the trains' underframe components. Works will be completed in a year's time.
