80% against, NT taxi fare cuts to be shelved
*
Transport Department

The temporary New Territories concessionary fare scheme which was launched early last month will be shelved after Transport Department surveys revealed that 80% of the NT taxi trade members were against it.

The overall assessment revealed that 14% of the trade members agreed to continue the temporary concessionary taxi fare, 80% of them were against and 6% of them gave no response.

As for drivers, 6% agreed to continue the concession, 86% disagreed and 8% gave no views.

As for owners, 23% agreed,75% were against, and 3% gave no views.

The NT taxi trade accepted the findings when they were presented to its members today.

The surveys aimed to gauge taxi operators' views on their support of the temporary concessionary fare scheme, and whether it should continue up to the end of the six-month period on December 7.

Based on the results, the Transport Department will seek the approval from the Chief Executive-in-Council to terminate the concession as soon as possible.
