The completion of the Dongshen water-supply network improvements represent the close co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong, Secretary for Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao says.

The Dongshen water-supply network improvement project, began in 2000. A closed aqueduct  was built to convey Dongjiang water directly to the Shenzhen Reservoir, isolating the water to be supplied to Hong Kong from all possible pollution sources.

The enhanced water-supply network goes into service today.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the network this morning, Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua said the enhanced network will ensure that the fresh water to be supplied to Hong Kong is of good quality.

The project shows the importance of the co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong, Dr Liao noted, adding that she hopes to see such co-operation in other environmental-protection issues.

A number of Guangdong and Hong Kong officials also attended today's ceremony, including Chief Secretary Donald Tsang, and senior officers from the Environment, Transport & Works Bureau and the Water Supplies Department.
