The Customs & Excise Department warns consumers not to use a kitchen product which releases excessive carbon monoxide upon combustion.

Customs officers recently seized 10 pieces of wire mesh from a Sham Shui Po retail shop. The item claims to have a gas-saving function when fitted to a flaming stove. The product name and usage instructions are written in Korean.

Samples of the mesh were sent to an accredited laboratory for tests. Upon combustion, the amount of carbon monoxide released was twice the limit stipulated in the Hong Kong Domestic Gas Appliances Basic Safety Assessment Requirements.

Officers have so far not found the product on sale elsewhere.

To report unsafe consumer goods call 2545 6182.
