The Customs & Excise Department urges people not to use Santen cosmetic cream and LiLiki Whitening Day Cream (Cream 911) which contain mercury levels exceeding the permissible limit.
Santen was found to have a mercury content ranging from 29,000 to 40,000 parts per million, while LiLiki samples contained 5,600ppm to 16,000ppm. The national standard limit is 1ppm.

The department has so far has seized 71 boxes of Saten and six boxes of LiLiki from two shops in Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun. Enforcement actions are ongoing.
Mercury poisoning damages the nervous system and kidneys. Symptoms include tremors, insomnia, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, impaired hearing and vision. In severe cases renal failure occurs.
It is an offence to supply, manufacture or import into Hong Kong consumer goods which do not comply with safety requirements.
