Mainland vegetables pose no safety threat
*

Surveillance data has so far indicated no food safety problem with vegetables imported from the Mainland, the Food & Health Bureau says.

The bureau today said starting from 2007 up to July, the Centre for Food Safety had taken 32,900 vegetables samples at the Man Kam To checkpoint for pesticide residues tests - and 99.9% passed. There have been no cases of food poisoning caused by pesticide residues in the past four years.

After some vegetable traders made allegations that vegetables have been imported into Hong Kong from improper sources under the disguise of a proper label, the bureau informed Mainland authorities.

In reply, the Mainland's inspection and quarantine authorities expressed concern, and said they had adopted a stringent regulatory regime governing the supply of vegetables to Hong Kong.

If there is any indication that registered farms or processing plants had violated regulations, the authorities will investigate.
